How statutory redundancy pay is worked out
You need at least 2 full years of service with your employer. For each full year of service you get:
- half a week's pay if you were under 22 that year
- 1 week's pay if you were 22 to 40
- 1.5 weeks' pay if you were 41 or over
Years are counted back from the date you are made redundant, using your age in each year of service. Only your most recent 20 years count, so older service drops off.
A worked example
Someone aged 45 with 10 years' service on £500 a week:
- the 4 most recent years were worked at ages 44 down to 41, earning 1.5 weeks each: 6 weeks
- the 6 years before that were worked at ages 40 down to 35, earning 1 week each: 6 weeks
That is 12 weeks' pay, and 12 × £500 = £6,000. Someone aged 35 with the same service and pay would get 10 weeks' pay, £5,000, because none of their years were at 41 or over.
The weekly pay cap
A week's pay is capped. In Great Britain, for redundancies on or after 6 April 2026, the cap is £751. In Northern Ireland it is £783. Pay above the cap is ignored, so on £900 a week the 45-year-old above gets 12 × £751 = £9,012.
The most anyone can get is 20 years at 1.5 weeks, which is 30 weeks at the cap: £22,530 in Great Britain and £23,490 in Northern Ireland.
Long service and young workers
Service beyond 20 years does not add anything. Someone aged 60 with 30 years' service has only the last 20 counted, worked at ages 59 down to 40. That gives 29.5 weeks' pay, or £17,700 on £600 a week.
Years worked before age 22 earn half a week each. Someone aged 21 with 3 years' service gets 1.5 weeks' pay, which is £450 on £300 a week.
Tax on redundancy pay
Statutory redundancy pay counts towards the £30,000 tax-free limit for termination payments.
